DECODE_ME is a useful application that supports a user during everyday shopping. The application facilitates evaluation of harmfulness of the products based on their ingredients. One of the most important features of DECODE_ME is an ability to take pictures of ingredients. With Optical Character Recognition (OCR) application recognizes ingredients and presents the results in readable form for the user.
We have prepared a full UI design from scratch (so that it’s highly readable and easy to interpret), iOS application with full support for all mobile devices running iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod) and the admin panel (used to update the broad base of ingredients). Synchronization is performed in a real time by means of fast and lightweight RESTful Web services.
Scanning results are always presented in two forms: The form of a pie chart and a list. Everything in the app is based on three colors that correspond to levels of harmfulness. This approach allowed us to clearly illustrate the percentage composition of ingredients and quickly identify the harmful ingredients on the list.
We have made sure that the user can instantly check new product on each screen by taking a picture. We have used the technique of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to implement recognition of ingredients where each image is processed by filters before the recognition process.
